THE ADAPTIVE CITY

Foregrounding adaptation and flood mitigation strategies for the existing residential block typologies in Surfside, this studio addresses extremely practical issues through urban design.

Additionally, students work in collaboration with diverse community members from Surfside, becoming instrumental in facilitating discussion with policy makers and community members. Focused on the core city block and the creation of a kit of parts, students design a catalog of forms that could be redeployed not only in Surfside, but other coastal communities. From property value to insurance rates to infrastructure reparation costs, feasibility becomes key in this studio as a means to convince the broad audience of Surfside.

The proposals operate through physical models at the scale of the Surfside block, and  the scale of the single family home, and bring to the fore ideas around a mid-rise typology, for vertical densification and  smaller footprints for buildings.
